Cisco is taking Microsoft to EU court in order to challenge the recent announcement of its take-over of the popular communications service Skype.
Cisco wants to ensure that the take-over won’t stop other providers from offering video services. They would like to see open standards similar to those used for mobile phones introduced.
Cisco offers its own video conferencing service called WebEx. Open standards for video services would potentially allow calls to be made between WebEx and Skype, as well as other services like Google Video.
This would be potentially a step forward in terms of intercommunication between businesses and consumers by allowing individuals to use any video platform they wish.
