It is likely that the founder of Megaupload site, Kim Dotcom will be refused bail because of the risk that he may flee the country. Mr Dotcom was detained in New Zealand during a raid in which he was accused of internet piracy and money laundering.
The arrest comes as the subject of tackling piracy became widely publicised last week when several high profile websites ‘blacked out’ in order to protest the proposed Sopa laws.
It is alleged that Mr Dotcom’s site caused £320 million in lost revenue to copyright holders. Now when users try to log onto the Megaupload site they see this message:
This domain name associated with the website Megaupload.com has been seized pursuant to an order issued by a U.S. District Court.
Mr Dotcom denies any criminal misconduct or wrongdoing and claims the website was diligent in responding to issues surrounding pirated material.
