IT was announced this week that the ambulance service in London lost 71 emergency calls when the clocks changed back last October. The logged calls disappeared from the CTAK system which is their in house monitoring software.

The CTAK system was first installed in the early 90s and was due to be replaced by CommandPoint software but following a system crash the London ambulance service reverted back to CTAK.

There are now concerns that the next clock change will result in a similar incident occurring. This incident clearly highlights the importance of organisations running effective software which can cope with changes to temporal conditions and updates.

Cisco is taking Microsoft to EU court in order to challenge the recent announcement of its take-over of the popular communications service Skype.

Cisco wants to ensure that the take-over won’t stop other providers from offering video services. They would like to see open standards similar to those used for mobile phones introduced.

Cisco offers its own video conferencing service called WebEx. Open standards for video services would potentially allow calls to be made between WebEx and Skype, as well as other services like Google Video.

This would be potentially a step forward in terms of intercommunication between businesses and consumers by allowing individuals to use any video platform they wish.

Payments are sent via the Pingit app — by keying in the recipient’s phone number and specifying the amount you want to send. However, if you key in the wrong number accidently your transfer may end up with the wrong recipient. Barclays have made it clear that they are not responsible for money gifted in error but if you inform them as soon as possible they will ‘attempt’ to recover the funds.

This breaches the terms of app developer guidelines set out by Apple.

Our growing consumption of information and willingness to use simple methods to find friends who also use the platforms has left the boundaries of privacy blurred. Being able to instantly share information with the world has also led to individuals sharing information without careful consideration of the consequences.

The app uses uniquely arranged capacitive plastic pads that allow the apps to identify what you’re holding. This allows the app to track the games developments as individuals play.

With this update board games could see a reinstatement as staple of family entertainment.

The new super-fast broadband should also alter the world of gaming, facilitating the current popularity for online gaming amongst peers.

Daniel Biddle a survivor of the 7/7 terrorist bombing who he lost both his legs as a result has designed an app detailing locations of step-free access, ramps and usable toilet facilities at thousands of venues within London.

The app, called Ldn Access, was designed after Mr Biddle found a lot of venues around London remained largely inaccessible to those with disabilities. He found there was also a lack of information when it came to actually locating suitable facilities within the city.

The app pinpoints the user’s current location and produces institutive icons and simple phrases, to help users find the facilities they need. The app has been designed for individuals with a variety of disabilities and dexterity problems.

Currently the app only works with Apple IOS devices but the developers hope to be able to reproduce the app for Android and Blackberry devices soon.
